The difference between indica and sativa shows first in the plant: indica grows compact, with broad, dark leaves, and flowers for 7 to 9 weeks; sativa grows tall and slender, with narrow, light leaves, and needs 10 to 14 weeks. Indica is known as body-focused and relaxing, sativa as uplifting and creative — but that is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Almost every modern strain is a hybrid, and how a strain feels is decided mainly by its cannabinoid and terpene profile.
In this guide we look at indica vs sativa vs hybrid from a breeder’s point of view: how to tell indica and sativa apart by leaf, growth and flower, what the difference means when you grow them, what a label such as “70% indica” really tells you — and which type suits you.

How to tell indica and sativa apart visually
The most reliable way to identify the type is the plant itself — long before the first flowers appear. These are the features to check:
- Leaf shape: indica leaves have broad, short fingers that sometimes overlap. Sativa leaves look almost needle-thin and spread wide.
- Colour: indicas are usually dark green, often with purple tones after cool nights. Sativas are lighter, sometimes almost lime green.
- Distance between the nodes: on an indica the side shoots sit close together and the plant forms a closed bush. Sativas have long internodes and look airy.
- Stretch in flowering: after the switch to 12/12 an indica grows about 50% taller; a sativa can double or triple its height.
- Bud structure: indica buds are compact and heavy, sativa buds long, narrow and more loosely built.

| Feature | How to recognise indica | How to recognise sativa |
|---|---|---|
| Seedling (weeks 2–3) | broad first leaf pairs, squat | narrow leaves, stretches early |
| Vegetative growth | bushy, many short side shoots | Christmas-tree shape, long side shoots |
| Flowering | dense, round colas | long, “foxtail-like” colas |
| Harvest | heavy, firm buds | lighter, airier buds |
Sativa bud vs indica bud: in the jar the difference is still visible. Indica buds are round, tight and heavy for their size; sativa buds are longer and fluffier and weigh less at the same volume. The density says nothing about potency — it mainly tells you how the plant grew.
The difference when growing
For the grower, the difference between indica and sativa is above all a question of time and space:
- Flowering time: our indica-dominant strains such as Northern Lights or Anesthesia finish after about 48 days of flowering under LED. A sativa such as Lennon needs 73 days.
- Space: indicas fit into small grow tents and onto a balcony. Sativas need height — or training such as Low Stress Training and ScrOG so that they don’t grow into the lamp.
- Yield: both types can deliver a lot. Indicas produce a lot of mass on a small area, sativas mainly when they get time and room.
- Mould risk: dense indica buds hold moisture longer and are more prone to bud rot. How to spot mould early is shown in our guide Bud rot and cannabis mould.
Indica or sativa for growing outdoors?
Outdoors, flowering time decides. In a temperate northern-hemisphere climate, indica-dominant strains are usually ripe in early to mid-September — Northern Lights in the 1st week of September, Anubis and Anesthesia in the 1st–2nd week of September. Classic sativas only ripen in October or November; Lennon, for example, in the 1st week of November. Without a greenhouse they run into cold and autumn rain.
Short season (the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Canada, the northern USA): if you still want a sativa outdoors, choose early-ripening selections such as Ramses or Kryptonite (both 80% sativa, ready in the 1st–2nd week of September), or autoflowering seeds, which flower regardless of day length.
Long season (southern Europe, California and the southern USA): here late sativas such as Amnesia Gold or Lennon have the time to finish, and a warm autumn takes the risk out of an October harvest.

Whether you may germinate seeds and grow plants depends on the law in your country, and the rules differ widely — please check the regulations that apply where you live before growing.
Indica vs sativa effects — and does the difference really matter?
In everyday use, indica and sativa are mainly associated with how they feel:
- Indica high: considered body-focused, relaxing and calming — more something for the evening.
- Sativa high: considered cerebral, uplifting and creative — more something for the daytime.
This split is helpful, but simplified. Indica and sativa originally describe growth forms, not active compounds. How a strain feels depends mainly on three things:
- Cannabinoids: how much THC and CBD the flower contains, and in what ratio.
- Terpenes: aroma compounds such as myrcene (earthy, often found in indicas), limonene (citrus) or terpinolene (typical of haze) shape the aroma and character.
- Harvest time and storage: flowers harvested later, with more amber trichomes, are considered heavier; badly stored flowers lose aroma.
An analysis of around 90,000 cannabis samples from the USA (PLOS ONE, 2022) found that the labels “indica” and “sativa” barely predict the chemical make-up. So if you are looking for a particular experience, the THC content and terpene profile tell you more than the label alone. On our strain pages you will find the dominant terpenes for each strain.
Indica vs sativa vs hybrid: what does “70% indica” mean?
Pure indicas or sativas are hardly sold as seeds any more. Almost every strain is a hybrid of both lines. The percentage on the strain page is the breeder’s assessment of which side dominates:
- Indica-dominant (60–90% indica): compact growth, shorter flowering, more relaxing — e.g. Anubis with 70% indica.
- Balanced (around 50/50): traits of both sides, often good for beginners — e.g. White Widow.
- Sativa-dominant (60–80% sativa): more height, longer flowering, more uplifting — e.g. Amnesia Gold with 75% sativa.
The percentage is not a lab measurement; it describes ancestry and growth habit. Above all it tells you how much space and time the plant needs. Balanced strains are collected in our hybrid seeds category, and the best-known American hybrids are covered in our guide Cannabis hybrids.

FAQ: Indica vs sativa
What is the difference between indica and sativa?
Indica grows compact and bushy, has broad, dark green leaves and dense buds, and flowers for about 7 to 9 weeks. Sativa grows tall and slender, has narrow, light green leaves and airier buds, and needs 10 to 14 weeks. In effect, indica is considered body-focused and relaxing, sativa uplifting and creative — but that is only a rule of thumb.
Which makes you more sleepy, indica or sativa?
Indica-dominant strains are considered calmer and are more often chosen for the evening, sativas more stimulating. How sleepy a strain makes you, however, depends more on its THC content, terpenes such as myrcene and the harvest time than on the label “indica” or “sativa”.
Which is stronger, indica or sativa?
Neither is stronger in principle. THC content depends on the individual strain: at Pyramid Seeds, for example, the sativa-dominant Amnesia Gold has 26% THC, the indica Northern Lights 20–22%.
Which is better, sativa or indica?
That depends on what you are looking for. For small spaces, short growing times and outdoor growing in a short season, indica-dominant strains are usually more practical. If you like citrus and haze aromas and an uplifting effect and have the time and space, go for a sativa.
Sativa or indica for beginners?
Indica-dominant strains are better suited to a first grow: they stay compact, flower for a shorter time and forgive mistakes. Autoflowering seeds are also beginner-friendly because they don’t need a change of light schedule.
Indica vs sativa vs hybrid: what is a hybrid?
A hybrid combines indica and sativa genetics. Almost every modern strain is a hybrid; the percentage on the strain page (for example “70% indica”) shows which side dominates the growth habit and flowering time. Balanced hybrids such as White Widow sit around 50/50.
Does indica vs sativa really matter?
For growing, yes: the type tells you how tall the plant gets and how long it flowers. For the effect, much less: a 2022 analysis of around 90,000 samples (PLOS ONE) found that the labels barely predict the chemical make-up. THC content and terpene profile say more.
Is Haze indica or sativa?
Haze is a sativa. Haze descendants such as Amnesia Haze or our Lennon (Haze × Jack Herer, 80% sativa) are sativa-dominant too — with citrus and incense notes and a long flowering time.
Is Northern Lights indica or sativa?
Northern Lights is an indica. Our Northern Lights (Afghani × Thai) is 90% indica, flowers in about 48 days under LED and is ready outdoors in the northern hemisphere in the 1st week of September.
Is OG Kush indica or sativa?
OG Kush is generally classed as an indica-dominant hybrid. Our Super OG Kush, from the Hindu Kush line, is 80% indica with 23–25% THC and flowers in about 48 days under LED.
