Gorilla Glue #4, or GG4 for short, is one of the best-known and most resinous cannabis strains in the world: buds so sticky they cling to your fingers, an aroma of diesel, pine and earth, and a powerful effect that first lifts the head and then sinks into deep relaxation. In this guide to the Gorilla Glue strain you will find where it comes from, why it got its name, its effects and THC level, whether it is indica or sativa and how to grow it indoors and outdoors — with our Gorilla Glue-based versions: Gorila, Auto Gorila, Gorila Fast and Gorila Regular.
Important: this article is about the cannabis strain, not the Gorilla Glue adhesive brand.

What is Gorilla Glue? The origin of GG4
Gorilla Glue #4 was created in the USA in the early 2010s by the breeders at GG Strains. Its story is almost an accident: a Chem's Sister plant turned hermaphrodite and pollinated a Sour Dubb. Among the seeds, which were then also crossed with Chocolate Diesel, phenotype number 4 appeared — hence the “#4” in the name. It stood out for something unusual: a layer of resin so thick that the trimming scissors stuck to it.
The strain became famous in 2014, when it won several Cannabis Cups in the USA. Since then it has been one of the most sought-after genetics in the world. Today there are many versions and crosses based on it — from feminized and autoflowering seeds to modern hybrids.
Why is it called Gorilla Glue?
“Glue” refers to the resin: the buds are so sticky that they cling to fingers and tools. The name led to a lawsuit against the breeders from the manufacturer of Gorilla Glue adhesive. After the settlement in 2017, the strain has mainly been marketed as GG4 or “Original Glue” — even though almost everyone still calls it Gorilla Glue. That is why many seed banks use their own names for their versions. Ours is called Gorila.

Gorilla Glue strain effects, THC and aroma
What are the effects of Gorilla Glue?
Gorilla Glue weed is known for a strong effect in two phases. First comes an intense, cerebral euphoria with a good mood and talkativeness. Then the weight moves into the body and a very deep relaxation follows — the famous feeling of being “glued” to the sofa. Because of this intensity, it is more of an afternoon and evening strain than a daytime one, and not the best choice for people with a low tolerance.
How much THC does Gorilla Glue have?
GG4 is a high-THC, low-CBD strain. Our Gorila, based on Gorilla Glue (Chem Sis × Sour Dubb), reaches 25–27% THC, as do Gorila Fast and Gorila Regular. Auto Gorila, the autoflowering version, comes in at 20–25%. And in our Gold Line, the cross Tutankhamon × Gorila Glue reaches 27%.
Aroma and terpenes
The profile of classic GG4 is unmistakable: diesel and fuel on a base of pine and earth, with sour notes and an undertone reminiscent of chocolate or coffee. Behind it are usually caryophyllene (spicy, diesel), myrcene (earthy) and limonene (citrus). In our Gorila, citrus, pine, earth and a sweet note come to the fore. You can read more about these compounds in our guide Terpenes and the entourage effect.
Is Gorilla Glue indica or sativa?
Gorilla Glue is a hybrid, slightly indica-dominant in most lines. Online you will still find figures ranging from “70% sativa” to “60% indica” — because many seed banks offer their own selections that differ in growth and effect. Our Gorila is 55% indica, Auto Gorila 60% indica. When growing, that means medium-height plants with strong branches, dense, very resinous buds and a relatively short flowering time. In the effect, it shows in the mix of head high and body heaviness that made the strain famous.
What fundamentally separates indica from sativa is explained in our guide Indica vs sativa vs hybrid.
| Classic GG4 (typical figures) | Gorila | Auto Gorila | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | hybrid, indica- or sativa-dominant depending on the source | feminized, 55% indica | autoflowering, 60% indica |
| THC | usually 25–28% | 25–27% | 20–25% |
| Flowering time | approx. 8–9 weeks | 53–63 days (49–56 under LED) | approx. 60 days from seed to harvest (53 under LED) |
| Indoor yield | approx. 500–600 g/m² | up to 850–900 g/1.5 m² | up to 800 g/1.5 m² |

Gorila Fast: the fast version of Gorilla Glue — the same potency (25–27%) in just 43 days of flowering under LED, the fastest strain in our whole catalogue. It is photoperiod, not an autoflower.
Growing Gorilla Glue indoors and outdoors
The Gorilla Glue base is robust and forgives mistakes — that is why our Gorila is rated “easy”. What you need to watch is exactly what makes it special: very dense, resin-laden buds.
Indoors
- Moderate vegetative phase: the plant stretches in flower. With 3 to 4 weeks of vegetative growth you will fill the space well.
- Training: topping, LST or ScrOG spread the shoots out under the light. The branches are strong and carry the weight of the buds well.
- Airflow: compact buds hold moisture. Keep the air moving and the humidity low in the last weeks — how to spot mould early is covered in our guide Bud rot and cannabis mould.
- Harvest by the trichomes: with this much resin, a magnifier is your best guide to the right moment. More in When to harvest cannabis.
- Smell: the diesel aroma is intense. Indoors, a carbon filter is practically a must.
Growing Gorilla Glue outdoors
The feminized Gorila is harvested outdoors in September. In warm, dry climates that works well. In regions with a short season and a wet autumn — such as the UK, northern Europe or Canada — the dense buds can catch mould, though. There, Auto Gorila is the safe choice: sown in late spring after the last frosts, it is ready around two months later in midsummer, long before the autumn rain. Gorila Fast also cuts the risk thanks to its short flowering.

Gorilla Glue for extracts
Its resin production makes Gorilla Glue one of the most popular strains for extracts. If that interests you, read our guide Cannabis extraction: best strains and methods.

Whether you may germinate seeds and grow plants depends on the law in your country, and the rules differ widely — please check the regulations that apply where you live before growing.
FAQ: Gorilla Glue strain (GG4)
What is the Gorilla Glue strain?
Gorilla Glue is a hybrid cannabis strain from the USA, bred by GG Strains from Chem's Sister, Sour Dubb and Chocolate Diesel. It became famous for its extreme resin production and several Cannabis Cup wins in 2014. Today it is often sold as GG4.
What are the effects of Gorilla Glue?
A strong effect in two phases: first an intense, cerebral euphoria, then a very deep physical relaxation — the feeling of being “glued” to the sofa. It is more of an afternoon and evening strain; how strong it feels depends on tolerance and dose.
Is Gorilla Glue indica or sativa?
A hybrid, slightly indica-dominant in most lines. Our Gorila is 55% indica, Auto Gorila 60% indica. Other figures you find online come from the different selections of individual seed banks.
How much THC does Gorilla Glue have?
It is a high-THC strain. Our Gorila, Gorila Fast and Gorila Regular have 25–27% THC, Auto Gorila 20–25% and the Gold Line cross Tutankhamon × Gorila Glue 27%.
What does Gorilla Glue smell and taste like?
Classic GG4 smells of diesel and fuel on a base of pine and earth, with sour notes and a hint of chocolate or coffee. Our Gorila brings citrus, pine, earth and a sweet note to the fore.
Why is it called Gorilla Glue?
Because of its resin: the buds are so sticky that they cling to fingers and scissors. After a legal dispute with the adhesive manufacturer of the same name, it has mainly been marketed as GG4 since 2017.
How long does Gorilla Glue take to harvest?
Our Gorila flowers for 49–56 days under LED, Gorila Fast for just 43 days. Auto Gorila is ready around 53 days after sowing under LED. Outdoors, the feminized Gorila is harvested in September.
Is Gorilla Glue good for beginners?
Yes. The Gorilla Glue base is robust and forgiving, and our Gorila is rated “easy”. The main thing to watch is airflow and humidity in late flowering, because the dense, resinous buds hold moisture.
Gorilla Glue auto or feminized?
Feminized if you want maximum potency (25–27% THC) and yield and can control the light cycle. Auto Gorila if you want it fast and simple or grow outdoors in a short season: it flowers without a light change and is ready in midsummer.
Is there a CBD version of Gorilla Glue?
We do not have a CBD version of Gorilla Glue. Strains with high CBD and moderate THC are in our CBD seeds category.
