The Origins of Cookies
The Cookies family of cannabis strains is one of the most famous and influential genetic lines in modern cannabis. Born in California in the early 2010s, Cookies quickly went from a local favourite to a worldwide sensation.
It all started when breeders crossed OG Kush with Durban Poison, creating a strain that became known as Girl Scout Cookies (GSC). This strain stood out for its unique terpene profile — a blend of sweetness, earthiness, and a light minty note — paired with a potent, long-lasting effect. GSC became the foundation for dozens of hybrids, and today the Cookies brand is synonymous with quality, potency, and unforgettable flavour.
Growing Characteristics of Cookies Strains
- Climate preference: Cookies thrives best in a warm Mediterranean setting with plenty of light. Indoors, it responds particularly well to controlled conditions.
- Flowering time: Around 8–10 weeks, depending on the phenotype.
- Yield: Average yield, but with premium-quality buds.
- Structure: Medium-height plants with dense, resinous flowers. Many phenotypes take on vivid purple hues by the end of flowering.
- Training: Techniques like topping, LST, or SCROG help boost yields and improve airflow through the dense canopy.
- Resistance: Not the most resistant to pests and mould, so humidity control is especially important, particularly in the later stages of flowering.
Overall, Cookies genetics demand attention, but reward growers with high THC content, eye-catching bud appearance, and a rich terpene profile.

A Pyramid Seeds breeder shared the fascinating story of how regular Cookies made it into their collection.
"We got hold of the American Cookies genetics thanks to grower friends in California who had been working with it for years. That's the version we now offer in feminized form in our catalogue."
"Later on, we decided to expand the collection and work with regular seeds too, to give growers more options. With the European strains it was easy, since we had access to male plants. But with the American strains, there were no regular male plants available. That meant we had to start a backcrossing process to restore them."
The Backcrossing Process
- Crossed Cookies with a European regular male plant (White Russian), producing seeds with 50% genetics from each.
- Grew out the plants and selected only males. Traits from White Russian were phased out, keeping those closest to Cookies.
- These males were crossed back with the original U.S. Cookies clone, reaching 75% Cookies genetics.
- The process was repeated, always backcrossing to the original clone, gradually increasing the Cookies percentage.
Final Results
- 75% Cookies
- 87.5% Cookies
- 93% Cookies
- Up to 97% Cookies in the final regular seed line
Thanks to this work, Pyramid Seeds managed to release regular versions of American strains, despite the market being largely focused on feminized seeds. The European genetics were easier to work with, while the American ones took years of painstaking effort. Only two regular American varieties are available so far, but more are on the way.

FAQ — Cookies cannabis strains
What are Cookies cannabis strains?
Cookies strains are cannabis genetics descended from the original Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) — born from OG Kush × Durban Poison in California in the early 2010s. They are known for sweet, creamy dessert aromas, high THC content (22–28%) and a balanced euphoria-relaxation effect.
What is the THC content of Cookies strains?
22–28% depending on the strain. Cookies USA by Pyramid Seeds reaches 25–28% — the highest of the Cookies line. Gelato and Do-Si-Dos sit at around 25–27%, Sunset Sherbet at 22–24%.
What is the difference between Cookies USA and Gelato?
Cookies USA is closer to the GSC original: earthy cookie-dough profile, up to 28% THC, indica-dominant. Gelato is a descendant (Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC) with a creamier, fruitier dessert profile and a more balanced hybrid character — typically 25–27% THC.
Why do regular Cookies seeds exist and how were they developed?
Because the American Cookies market only knew feminized clones, there were no male Cookies plants for regular seeds. Pyramid Seeds developed a line with up to 97% Cookies genetics over several backcrossing cycles (BC1 to BC4) — years of breeding work that made Cookies USA Regular possible.
Which Cookies strain is best for beginners?
Auto Cookies USA and Auto Gelato — both autoflowering with no light schedule, robust, easy difficulty, ready in 65–70 days. For photoperiod beginners, Sunset Sherbet is a good choice — an easier grow than the other Cookies strains.
Where can I buy Cookies cannabis seeds?
