Nedávný výzkum, financovaný Národním institutem pro výzkum zneužívání drog (NIDA), odhalil zajímavý fakt o marihuaně: citrusová sloučenina zvaná D-limonen může způsobit, že užívání marihuany bude méně úzkostným zážitkem. Tento objev objasňuje, jak THC, složka marihuany způsobující „rauš“, a D-limonen mohou společně snižovat úzkost a paranoiu, aniž by ovlivnily ostatní účinky.

Studie, zveřejněná v časopise Drug and Alcohol Dependence, vychází ze zkušeností lidí, kteří užívali D-limonen spolu s THC. Ti, kteří tak učinili, hlásili menší pocity úzkosti a paranoie než ti, kteří konzumovali pouze THC. Je zajímavé, že D-limonen ovlivňuje úzkost a paranoiu spojené s THC, aniž by zasahoval do dalších smyslových vjemů nebo kognitivních funkcí.

Účastníci studie inhalovali vaporizované formy D-limonenu a THC (společně nebo s placebem), zatímco vědci sledovali jejich reakce. Výsledky potvrdily, že kombinace THC s D-limonenem může výrazně snížit úzkostné účinky marihuany.
