Une étude récente, publiée dans Preventive Medicine Reports, remet en question le stéréotype selon lequel les consommateurs de marijuana de marijuana marchent plus que les non-consommateurs et les utilisateurs de cigarettes électroniques. Cette fréquence accrue de marche reste significative même après ajustement des divers facteurs, bien qu’aucune différence notable n’ait été observée en matière d’entraînement de force ou d’activité physique générale entre les groupes.

Cette étude novatrice est l'une des premières à explorer le lien entre la consommation de marijuana et l'exercice physique, couvrant divers types d'activités. Les résultats contredisent l'idée selon laquelle les consommateurs de cannabis sont moins actifs. Les chercheurs ont conclu que l’usage de marijuana n’influence pas significativement la probabilité de pratiquer certaines activités physiques.

L'étude propose également des raisons possibles pour lesquelles les consommateurs de marijuana marchent davantage. Certains adultes utilisent peut-être le cannabis pour augmenter leur motivation et leur plaisir à faire de l'exercice. De plus, la concentration des consommateurs de marijuana dans les zones urbaines, où la marche et les transports en commun sont courants, notamment dans les états où le cannabis médical et récréatif est légal, pourrait jouer un rôle.

Par ailleurs, une autre étude publiée en décembre a soutenu l’idée que consommer de la marijuana avant l’exercice rend l’activité plus agréable et intensifie le « runner’s high » (euphorie du coureur).
