El estudio, financiado por el gobierno alemán en el contexto de la nueva política de legalización del cannabis en el país, revela que el Δ9-THC en dosis bajas podría revertir el deterioro cognitivo relacionado con la edad. Los investigadores observaron que en los ratones mayores, el THC aumentó la actividad de mTOR, una proteína crucial para la función cognitiva y los procesos celulares asociados al envejecimiento. Los investigadores también encontraron que el THC desencadenó un efecto de doble fase. Inicialmente, aumentó la actividad de mTOR y la movilización de energía en el cerebro, promoviendo el crecimiento sináptico. Esto fue seguido por una reducción de la actividad de mTOR en el tejido adiposo, lo que contribuyó a efectos antienvejecimiento al disminuir los procesos metabólicos. Este doble efecto podría abrir la puerta al desarrollo de medicamentos que no solo mejoren la cognición, sino que también combatan el envejecimiento.

Es importante destacar que el estudio observó efectos dependientes de la edad. Mientras que los ratones mayores se beneficiaron de una mejora en las habilidades cognitivas, los ratones más jóvenes experimentaron efectos adversos, como un deterioro de la memoria. Esto coincide con investigaciones previas que también indicaron resultados diferentes del tratamiento con THC según la edad.

Los hallazgos sugieren que el Δ9-THC en dosis bajas podría ofrecer un enfoque novedoso para tratar el envejecimiento cerebral, lo que podría conducir a avances en terapias antienvejecimiento y de mejora cognitiva.
